Vulcano Eruption FOGO, 2014

S.O.S. FOGO - NOVEMBER 23th, 2014

The Cape Verde archipelago, located 500 km off the coast of West Africa, consists of 10 islands, nine of which are inhabited. The island of Fogo, with its capital Sao Filipe, has about 22,000 inhabitants.

The lava flow from the erupting volcano 'pico do fogo" on the Cape Verde island "Ilha do Fogo", devastating large parts of the village Bangaeira and the second village Portela. These two villages are located in the "Caldeiras", a plain of +/- 8 km diameter, which lies within the 1000 meter high "wall" of the crater. Meanwhile, more than 9 square kilometers flooded with liquid lava, coming from different erupting places.

The "Pico do Fogo" volcano on the island of Fogo broke out on Sunday, November 23, 2014. It was since 1995, but the lava eruption was limited. But current disaster is of a completely different caliber, in contrast with previous, almost all residents had to be evacuated from the crater plain. The rest of the island is buried in dust, airtraffic was stopped. Two churches, a hotel, a school and dozens of homes have now been destroyed .

The whole region has been closed due to security concerns. Many residents are collected by family on the nearby island of Brava or currently live in tents in the safer places in the crater.

In the "Caldeiras" live mostly from grape cultivation. The volcanic eruption has disastreuze consequences for the hundreds of small grape farmers, where the reconstruction of the vineyards could take at least 5 to 6 years. The vineyards of our wine "Vinha Maria Chaves" lays beyond the "Caldeiras". Therefore, the plants are spared. We will now examine to what extent the vineyard Vinha Maria Chaves can help catch up the losses and how to assist the population.

In any case, an aid campaign was launched by specifying for each bottle sold, 250 escudos goes to helping of the residents.
